(OUTDATED) Klaus – Netflix’s Upcoming Animated Christmas Movie

With or without an account, people know that Netflix is no stranger to animation. Not only do they stream animation from different companies like Disney and DreamWorks, they have their own original animation. For kids, there are shows like Super Monsters and Hilda. For adults, there’s the anthology series Love, Death, and Robots, and adult comedies like Bojack Horseman, Big Mouth and Disenchantment. Quality may vary. There’s even stuff for anime fans like Aggrestsuko and Castlevania.

Netflix may have all these animated series on their side, but something they lack is original animated movies. Of course, there are some they distributed like Blame! and Duck Duck Goose, but still, not many. Fortunately in Christmas 2019, Netflix will release their first animated Christmas movie, but sadly, not many people are talking about it. That animated movie is Klaus.

Klaus is a Christmas movie will tell the origin story of Santa Claus. A postman named Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) heads to northern Scandinavian village to introduce to the postal service to the locals. Jesper later finds a toymaker named Klaus (J.K. Simmons) who helps him achieve his goal. The movie is directed by Sergio Pablos, the co-creator of the Illumination Entertainment’s, Despicable Me. The movie is animated by SPA Studios (Sergio Pablos Animation Studio), located in Madrid, Spain. The studio has worked on Despicable Me, Nocturna, Rio, and The Smurfs.

A teaser trailer was released on Vimeo in 2015. The movie was going to be produced and distributed by Atresmedia. But in 2017, it was reported that Netflix will produce the movie with Atresmedia. Klaus will also be the first animated movie from Netflix to have an oscar-qualifying run. The film is set to release in Christmas 2019. If you’re interested to see more about the movie, you can check SPA Studos’ vimeo to see various progression shots of the movie. Let’s hope Klaus is as good as it looks! ~

UPDATE (08/25/2019): You can also find the progression shots on their YouTube channel. There’s also going to be an art book based off the movie coming this November.
